AURA announces the re-appointment of Dr. David Silva as NOAO Director
February 28, 2014
Washington — Today the AURA Board announced the appointment of Dr. David Silva as Director of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) for a second five-year term beginning July 7, 2014. Dr. Silva was initially appointed in July, 2008.
AURA convened an independent Committee Chaired by Dr. Gunther Hasinger, Director of the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, to make recommendations on a possible re-appointment. Based on a favorable finding, the AURA Observatory Council, which oversees NOAO, recommended to the AURA Board that Dr. Silva be reappointed.
In announcing the re-appointment, Dr. William Smith, President of AURA, said "Dave Silva's strategic thinking, his realism, his positive attitude, and his ability to develop priorities and to communicate these to the community have made him an outstanding Director and community leader. I look forward to his continuing contributions to AURA and to NOAO."
Dr. Dan Clemens, Chair of the AURA Board, commented "Dr. Silva has had an impressive first five years as NOAO Director in managing changing funding and astronomical landscapes, in forging forward leaning major scientific collaborations, and in setting positive examples of how best to assess and learn from challenges and setbacks. The AURA Board supports his re-appointment and looks forward to the broader scientific and community roles for NOAO in the next five years under his leadership."
